A Fairy Ring
Wednesday, 5 August 2026
I was driving on Rummel Road in Holland Township when I noticed a fairy ring, a ring of white mushrooms on a lawn. Stopping was not an option. But doubbling back when returning home was certainly a possibility. So that's what I did. Looped around from Spring Mills Road onto Rummel Road, pulled into a side street, reversed, shut off car but turned on flashers. Grabbed camera and walked over to the house.
A woman was outside with 3 dogs on their leashes. I asked if it was alright to photograph. She said it was fine, asking had I seen the mushrooms as I drove by.
Having put her dogs in the house the woman came back out as I was taking picture after picture. (Easy enough to discard the ones I would not want to share in public.) I asked how long the tree had been cut down. In efect she said "What tree?" as they'd never had one removed. I pointed out the fairy ring, explained about the mycellium underground and why they had this fascinating ring of quite large white mushrooms on their lawn, mushrooms being the fruiting body of the underground mycelium, responding to our recent good rains. All appear to be mature, caps open and ready to release spores.
Substantial in size, very visible with their snowy white caps.
Some are singletons, others clustered, all in prime condition.
